James Blackshaw

Since his debut album, Celeste in 2003, James Blackshaw (UK) has been considered one of the leading Avant-folk guitarists of his generation. Unlike any other, he combines British pastoral folk with fingerpicking and contemporary classical music a la Terry Riley.

Blackshaw has released instrumental albums since 2003, where his virtuoso skills on 12-string guitar stand central. Beginning in 2009, piano pieces appeared and he increasingly fills his compositions with cello, drums and violin. On his tenth studio album Summoning Suns his voice is used for first time with lyrics inspired by, among others, singer-songwriters from the 60s and 70s such as Nick Drake and Bert Jansch and the orchestral baroque pop of Van Dyke Parks.

The number Celeste Part I inspired Fabien Giraud & Raphaël Siboni for their series The Unmanned where each episode begins and ends with this piece of music. More than enough reason to invite him for a concert at the opening of Une Machine Simple.
