Watch That Sound

TH 24.01 2013 — 20:00

The Hum of Holland (Stella van Voorst van Beest)
Language: Dutch / Subtitles: English / Duration: 72 min
How does The Netherlands actually sound? Do we take time to really listen to the sounds all around us? Or is there so much noise that we prefer to block them out? What effect does all this sound have upon us? Is there still somewhere within The Netherlands that is quiet? And how does that quiet place sound?
This is a fascinating documentary about the Dutch soundscape, but also an invitation to listen closely and take a more focused look at our surroundings. With, among others, sound artist Justin Bennett.

Experiments for Microphones (Bob Levene)
Language: none / Duration: 7 min
A series of five short performances that investigate the relationship between sound, microphone, camera and action.

Sensibel (Michiel van Bakel)
Language: none / Duration: 3 min
If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? This philosophical riddle has been attributed to George Berkeley, in the 18th century. This short experimental film is a representation of sound and vibration, and the impossibility of silence. Animated pictures take the viewer from an indefinite no-man’s-land to the city laid open, and beyond.

The exhibition Watch That Sound will be open continuously.
