Remainders #1: critical practice workshop

TU 21.02 — FR 24.02 2017

Régis Perray

As part of Remainders, the artistic team of Netwerk organizes an intensive critical practice workshop (February 21 -24, 2016) for the MA students in Fine Art of LUCA, School of Arts, Brussels (mentored by Richard Venlet & Camiel Van Winkel) in collaboration with Dr. Edgar Schmitz (Goldsmiths, London). The workshop will revolve around the implications of the transfer of a work of art from the studio to an (institutional) exhibition space.

Netwerk’s archive and exhibition history form the context, its building the environment for the workshop with the students. The structure is given by selected case studies and accompanying artistic and institutional questions. How does a contemporary art institution engage with the writing of history? How does a work of art engage with the reading of a historical context of a place? What are the requirements of the space, the discourse, the work of art and the artistic practice? What is the statute of a realized project when implemented as ready made? How can an artist define the future and historical image of an institution? How can we address the present through engagement with the past?

The students are asked to respond departing from their respective artistic attitude to this given material and conceptual context. From this exercise, they will further distil a topic, a space, an artifact or work of art to prepare an intervention that will be implemented in the Remainders spring program.
